Not everyone knows who Ronn Moss is, but most people will recognize him as his alter ego: Ridge from The Bold and the Beautiful. Last Friday night, Geoff and I went along to see Ronn perform at the Revesby Workers’ Club. Now, you may be wondering, what exactly was Ronn performing? Was he doing The Monologues of Ridge? Was he teaching his audience how to perfect that angsty, middle-distance gaze? No; Ronn Moss was in Sydney to sing. That’s right- Ronn Moss says that his passion is music, and he was here in Sydney to prove it. And, believe it or not, I was going along because my boyfriend is a fan of Ronn. Geoff loves Ronn’s hammy acting style, as well as his ability to make fun of himself. Geoff even studied The Bold and the Beautiful for some sort of media studies unit for uni. Geoff has Ronn’s album- or, I should say, his latest album, because Ronn has had lots of albums before his latest effort, Uncovered. Who would have known? The auditorium was filled with women of all ages and races, which just goes to show that soap operas, for all of their fluff and gloss, have an uncanny ability to unite the most disparate of individuals. The one thing that all the women (well, except for me) had in common was that they ALL LOVED RON. They kept calling out, “You’re sexy!” and “Take your shirt off!” At the back of the auditorium, amongst lots of Ronn Moss fan gear, there were g-strings for sale with Ronn Moss’ face on the front, and a pillow case that had “Sweet Dreams, Love Ronn Moss” embroidered on it with pink and blue threads. I found all this sex symbol stuff very amusing, because really, Ronn Moss is the exact same age as my Dad. At one point, Ronn used his microphone to conduct the following conversation with a Spanish grandmother in the audience:

Spanish grandmother: [shouts something]
Ronn: “What did you say?”
Spanish grandmother: (into Ronn's microphone) “Why you so hot?”
Ronn: “Why are you so hot?”
Spanish grandmother: “I’m hot because I saw you, and you are hot.”

I don’t know about you, but that whole argument seemed pretty cyclical, but hey, it got a laugh from the audience. In fact, through pretty much all of the show, Geoff and were giggling away. The performance was just so cheesy, and it was so funny seeing all of the women going nuts over Ronn. Ronn sang classic songs such as You Can Leave Your Hat On, which was accompanied by his female back-up singers doing a striptease. Which I thought was pretty sexist and weird, considering the audience wanted to see Ronn naked, and not the ladies. The back-up singers also sang a medley of pop songs while Ronn was having a costume change. They did a version of the Pussycat Dolls’ Dontcha, which went, “Dontcha wish your boyfriend was HOT like RONN, dontchaaaaaaaaaa…dontcha, baby?” Surprisingly, Ronn didn’t sing many songs from his new album- he mostly did covers. Which was a bit annoying, because I listened to his album about 3 times that day- something I would not choose to repeat again. However, for his finale, Ronn sang a song called It’s All About You, which is from his new album. The chorus goes, “It’s all about YOU! Y-O-U!” The song sounds like motivational music for primary schoolers. Geoff and I ran to the front of the stage and joined the young professional women, suburban grandmas and full-time mums as they danced and squealed in front of the stage. Ron even reached out and touched Geoff’s hand! Geoff thoroughly enjoyed the concert, as you can see by the picture below. He sang along, loud and proud, to It’s All About You.

Finally, at the end of his show, Ronn said, “I’ll be up the back signing autographs.” Geoff and I bolted to the back of the auditorium, and we were second in line. Hurrah! First in line was a middle-aged lady with her very elderly mother. When Ronn finally arrived, he was SO NICE to the elderly lady. He held her hand, looked into her eyes and gave her all of the Ridge charm that he had. The elderly lady was so touched that she turned away, and began to weep. When it was our turn, I started to babble, “Ronn, you rocked! We loved your concert!” Geoff, shockingly, was so star struck that he couldn’t even speak. Ronn signed Geoff’s CD, and then he was nice enough to stand up and have his photo taken with us. Ronn put his arm around me, but I protested, “I’m not your fan- it’s my boyfriend!” The plan was that, if Geoff and I got a photo with Ronn, we would both kiss him on the cheek. But, as you can see by this photo, Geoff was struck by uncharacteristic nerves once again.

When I tell my friends that I went to see Ronn Moss, their main question is, “Is his jawline really that chiseled?” And the answer to that, dear friends, is yes. And, believe it or not, he can belt out a tune, too. Ronn seems like an all-round nice guy, and while I don’t wish that he was my boyfriend, he’d be a fun uncle to have around.
